quick question about the frugal squirrel oxygen absorbers

Today was the day I put aside to start sealing the food accululated in my Dining room. There was an Emil from the frugal squirrel saying that the absorbers they sent were made in Taiwan and they were sending new ones. They apologized for the inconvenience. Is there something wrong with the first ones made in Taiwan. I dont want to wait another week. Anyone else get a similar email?

It's pretty hard to get an oxygen absorber wrong. I think there has been a major change in the production (company changed hands or similar) and a rebranding of oxygen absorbers lately. You are unable to get some of the older brand. Some are from Taiwan, some from Japan I think.

All an oxygen absorber is, is iron powder in an air-permeable bag, that rusts to form iron oxide, it is this combining of oxygen and oxidation of the iron that removes the oxygen from the atmosphere of the container. There is nothing that magical about them and you could concievably make your own oxygen absorber...

The iron oxide from these baggies is also great for demonstrating magnetic lines of resistance with magnets etc. It is a very fine powder (to speed up oxidation with surface area) and looks almost like a fluid in a magnetic field.

Jaima, this one is a tough call. From my past experience once you open the absorber package you have to work quickly because they activate.
Aparrently these absorber are weak or flawed.

Maybe a test is needed.
Have 2 canning quart jars ready with lids and rings. Prep the lid with hot water.
Open the absorber package and place 1 or 2 in the first jar then seal.
Place the rest of the absorbers in the second jar and seal for temporary storage.this will deactivate them more or less.
Wait and see if the first jar starts to seal, maybe 10 minutes???
If it seals down good and tight....well proceed... and use a few extra absorbers per mylar bag for insurance.
That's the best I can come up...with Good luck

Thanks you both for the responses. I always wondered how oxygen absorbers worked.. I got some mason jars and will test them first..

Contact them and ask what the problem is with the originals. They wouldn't be sending you new ones unbidden unless there was a serious problem with them.
